The 2025 Eredivisie is Still Up in the Air… Barely
As of 14 May, 2025 there is only one match left for both Ajax and PSV Eindhoven. Sadly, we won't get to see them play in a final, head-to-head, winner-takes-it-all match up, but everything is still at stake for both teams and everything is literally still on table.
Ajax has not been playing well, and today's draw has them in second place and a point behind PSV Eindhoven. In their last 5 matches, Ajax has two losses, two draws and only one win. In stark contrast, PSV has won all five of its last matches, including today's rout, and is looking more likely to repeat as champions. This cannot be sitting well with the Ajax squad or the team's supporters. It will all come down to the final matches of the season, where Ajax must win and PSV must draw or lose for Ajax to take it all. Otherwise, PSV will be back-to-back winners of the Eredivisie.
Ajax have won 36 titles and are surely looking to add to that number. While FC Twente is not in the championship hunt this season, they still have a lot at stake if they want to qualify for European competitions. And they, of course, would love to be a spoiler. A Brief History of Ajax
Ajax was founded in 1900, and this year celebrated its 125th anniversary. Along with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, Ajax makes up the country's "Big Three" clubs. They are known around the world as AFC Ajax, Ajax Amsterdam and more commonly as Ajax. The club is named after the legendary Greek hero, which is also represented in the team's logo.
With 36 Eredivisie titles since the league's founding in 1956 – and 8 more in the earlier Dutch championship format – Ajax is the most successful club in Dutch football history. They would like nothing more than to add their 37th Eredivisie title to the already filled mantle. And if captain Jordan Henderson has his way, that is exactly what will happen at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
All About FC Twente
The club is sometimes known internationally as FC Twente Enschede, though more commonly as FC Twente, and was formed in 1965. As of this writing, they sit in 5th place in the Dutch football league. They won their first and so far, only Eredivisie title in the 2009-2010 season. While they are out of the running for the championship this season, they still have their eyes on playing in European competitions, and will fight hard to the very end.
Fans of the club are called the Tukkers, and beating Ajax is always a big deal. And while Liverpool is the team best known for singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel), before their games, other teams including FC Twente have also adopted the song, making it their own rallying cry, and making sure their community is part of their matches.
